The Nerd Issue: Seattle’s Beloved Geek Festivals
The list of modern fan conventions for various genres of entertainment extends to the first conventions held in the s. Some fan historians claim that the Philadelphia Science Fiction Conference, a. Philcon , was the first science fiction convention ever held. Others, such as Fred Patten and Rob Hansen , make this claim for the January event in Leeds , England , organized by the Leeds Science Fiction League, which was specifically organized as a conference, with a program and speakers.
In the two special episodes that aired TLC is currently testing the show for a potential series , viewers were treated to the personal tales of a handful of the individuals that make the pilgrimage to Comic Con each year — many of them sadly single. When the costumed Trekkies, Potterphiles, and Iron Men came into the convention center, you could see why: It was simply too much fandom for most people to take. The show was set up so viewers would root for these socially awkward people to find love — and I did.
In the first of the two episodes we were introduced to Sal, a year-old who works at GameStop and loves Iron Man. Also at the event was Kelly, a Harry Potter enthusiast who showed the cameras her Potter bedroom shrine. A little intense, sure, but Kelly definitely came across as a sweet, likable, slightly awkward lady who I was definitely rooting for and not just because Potter is my fandom of choice. At the event, Kelly was totally crushing on Iron Man, but Iron Man proved to be quite the hot commodity.

I was a little wary before watching the special that the geeks would be mocked for their passion for Harry Potter and the like, but I was pleasantly surprised that the shows instead portrayed them as sensitive, real people who have just as much of a chance at finding love as the non-geeks out in the world.
Geek Love not only follows the quick interactions of speed-dating — we also get to see the first dates of those lucky enough to find a match.
